International
Seminar about Language Learning Preserves Culture in the Future
Faculty
of Language and Arts in State University of Medan was holding an international
seminar about language learning preserve culture in the future on Saturday, May
04, 2013 in the Madani Hotel, North Sumatra, Indonesia. And the presented by
five speakers were a very interesting who 2 of them come from Malaysia. And one
of them from USA.
International
seminar had been successful, where the events are arranged very neatly. The
events ware led by Septian Nasution and Sri Lestari Setiawan that the began from registration of participants, the opening
act like the opening dance of Tor-tor of
Sumba, National anthem like Indonesia
Raya song, opening prayer, opening speech was delivered by Hasbi Ramadan (The Head of Event Organizer), Rahmad Husein Nasution (The
head of Students Council), Dra. Masitowarni Siregar, M.Ed. (The Head of
Communittee ), Prof. Dr. Hj. Sumarsih, M.Pd. ( The Head of English Department), first presentation by Prof.Amrin Saragih, Ma. Ph,D and Prof.
Bahren Umar Siregar, MA. Ph,D then second,
presentation by Dr. Aspalilah Shapii (from Malaysia), Dr. Noor Fadhilah (from
Malaysia) and the last speaker by Christine Lewis (from Cambridge University). Next
the events of International Seminar had lunch break, lunch interest, door
prize, soft closing and the last proceedings discussion.
International
seminar was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Ibnu Hajar Damanik, M.Si. Unfortunately he
could not attended due to went to Jakarta then he was replaced by Dr. Daulat
Saragi, M. Hum. International seminar discusses about the language, that
language is a social phenomenon. This means that language forms and evolves in
the society. There is no language without society and there is no society
without language. It also discusses about social context of language,
translation of language, and cultural-based student centre learning for ESL/EFL
classroom.
“Translation
is also intercultural as it is the carryover of one’s cultural knowledge from
one culture to another “Prof. Bahren Umar Siregar, MA. Ph,D said.
In
the events, Prof. Dr. Hj. Sumarsih. M.Pd. promoted a book that language in the
learning culture about learning revolution who arranged by her, and two of her
friends. The presentation was interested enough, with used clip video and
clearly speech. Each season of presentation had 3 people to asked something to
the speakers with used English speech. And to not bored in the beginning in the
middle and in last of the seminar, participants provided entertainment like
some songs from the community of Medan.

In
the presentation, the speakers had some conclusion about this topic. “Language
learning has 3 areas : learning
language, learning through language and learning about language.” Prof.Amrin
Saragih, Ma. Ph,D said. “when political and economical power is closely tied to
a particular language and culture.. there is a strong incentive for individuals
to abandon their language in favor of another more prestigious one,” Christine
Lewis added. Then, Dr. Noor Fadhilah
said “learning English doesn’t mean neglecting or abounding your culture an
local languages.” And the last conclusion came from Dr. Aspalilah Shapii added
“culture is the characteristic of a particular group of people, defined by
everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.
